Glass Production Process Involving Soda Ash

  1. Batch Mixing: Soda ash is mixed with other raw materials like silica sand, limestone (calcium carbonate), and cullet (recycled glass). This mixture forms the batch that will be melted to create glass.
  2. Melting: The batch is fed into a furnace where it is heated to high temperatures (around 1,700°C or 3,092°F). Soda ash acts to lower the melting point of silica, aiding in the formation of a homogenous molten glass.
  3. Refining: The molten glass is refined to remove bubbles and ensure uniformity. Soda ash helps in the refining process by facilitating the release of gas bubbles trapped within the melt.
  4. Forming: The refined molten glass is shaped into desired forms, such as flat sheets for windows, containers, or intricate designs for decorative items. Soda ash’s influence on viscosity makes this process more manageable.
  5. Annealing: The formed glass products are gradually cooled in an annealing oven to relieve internal stresses. Properly formulated soda ash contributes to the thermal stability of the glass during this phase.
